The Benefits of Modafinil for Reducing Daytime Sleepiness

Modafinil is a wake-promoting medication that is used to treat conditions like narcolepsy and sleep disordered breathing (obstructive sleep apnea). It can also be useful for those who work late shifts.
Modafinil is generally well-tolerated and has fewer side effects than other stimulant medications. However, it may interact with some prescription drugs and dietary supplements.
Boosts Mental Performance
The drug modafinil 200 mg was developed to treat narcolepsy, but it’s also used off-label as a cognitive enhancer and to boost alertness in people who are not sleep-deprived. It works in a way that’s not fully understood, but it seems to affect some chemicals in the brain involved in wakefulness and alertness.
Researchers have tested modafinil’s effects on mental performance in a number of studies. They found that it improves performance in people who are not sleep-deprived, which is consistent with past research on this topic. They also found that it decreases night shift-related problems like fatigue, mood disturbances, and decreased cognitive function.
In one study, modafinil reduced EDS (Emotional Dysregulation Syndrome) associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD). They did this by using a questionnaire, and the results showed that participants who took modafinil experienced less EDS than those who didn’t take the medication.
They also saw an improvement in the cognitive domains of processing speed and verbal learning, which supports the idea that the cognitive enhancing effects of modafinil extend beyond simply reducing excessive sleepiness. The same studies showed that the drug also increased wakefulness in patients with narcolepsy and those with work schedules that cause them to have trouble maintaining a normal sleep-wake cycle (shift-work sleep disorder). They also found that it reduced apneic episodes in those with sleep apnea.
Reduces Stress
Modafinil promotes wakefulness and improves alertness, which is why it’s prescribed for narcolepsy and other sleep disorders. But it’s also increasingly used off-label as a “smart drug,” to enhance cognitive functions like focus and concentration that can help with things like exam preparation.
Modalert Tablet has been found to increase alertness in healthy people who are not sleep-deprived, and it seems to do so without causing any of the negative side effects associated with traditional psychostimulants like amphetamine or methylphenidate. This suggests that it’s the first well-validated pharmaceutical nootropic that can genuinely enhance cognition in people who are not sleep-deprived.
A number of studies have shown that modafinil is effective for reducing stress, anxiety, and mood disorders. It has been used for conditions including myotonic dystrophy, narcolepsy, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, bipolar disorder, obstructive sleep apnea, and jet-lag.
One study of patients with obstructive sleep apnea found that modafinil significantly reduced anxiety symptoms, and it was associated with improved performance on vigilance tasks (Turner et al, 2003). Another study of obstructive sleep apnea patients who were taking nasal continuous positive airway pressure therapy reported fewer anxiety symptoms after 8 weeks of treatment, and it was associated with improvements in digit span, spatial planning, delayed matching, and verbal fluency tasks (Schwartz et al, 2004). However, some studies have also reported increased anxiety in patients who took modafinil.
Improves Memory
Modafinil has been shown to improve memory in sleep-deprived humans and animals. The drug increases working memory performance in a dose- and delay-dependent manner, without affecting exploratory or anxiety-related activity (Beracochea et al, 2001). In addition, modafinil reduces the impairment in logical reasoning and response time seen after sleep deprivation in humans.
However, little attention has been paid to the effects of modafinil on cognition in healthy people who are not sleep-deprived. A recent study compared the effects of modafinil to placebo in healthy individuals who had not recently been sleep-deprived.
The participants were given either modafinil 200 mg or a placebo for 4 weeks. Subjective daytime sleepiness was assessed using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Physiologic sleepiness was objectively measured by multiple sleep latency tests. Participants in the modafinil group reported significantly greater improvement in ESS scores and slept longer during MSLT sessions than those on placebo.
The results of this randomized controlled trial suggest that modafinil is safe and effective for improving cognitive performance in non-sleep-deprived healthy subjects. If this finding holds up in larger studies, modafinil could become the first well-validated pharmaceutical nootropic agent that enhances cognition independent of its ability to reduce excessive sleepiness in narcolepsy and other sleep disorders. If so, the ethical discussion of this type of drugs will have to consider whether we should classify, condone or condemn a medicine that improves human performance without any underlying cause, such as fatigue or depression.
Increases Energy
Modafinil increases energy levels and prevents daytime sleepiness, allowing you to stay awake during the day and avoid sleeping too much at night. It also improves mental performance, making it easier to focus and think clearly. In one study, participants who took Modafinil experienced better memory and fewer errors when performing complex thought processes than those who did not take the drug.
